What's a electric fence energiser?

An electric fence energiser supplies your electric fence with the required power. This device is primarily responsible for the current pulses sent at regular intervals through your electric fence.

When the electric fence is touched, the previously open circuit closes and the animal receives an unpleasant current surge.

Important: These currents are completely harmless to the animals and are only used for proper education. If the animals are "shocked" at every fence contact, they don't try to leave the area below after a while.

Your pasture fence will only become really secure with the power supply from a fence energiser.

What fence energisers are there?

Basically, there are three basic types of energizers:

How to find the right electric fence energiser with 5 questions

Question 1: Which animals do you have?

For robust animals such as horses, bulls, cows or sheep you need a powerful fence energiser with a high voltage (at least 4000 Volt) and a high impulse energy (at least 2 Joule).

For more sensitive animals such as pigs or chicken a weaker fence energiser is sufficient. In this case we recommend a voltage of at least 2500 Volt and a impulse energy of (depending on fence length and vegetation) 0.10 to 2 Joule.

Question 2: How long (in kilometers) is your fence and how overgrown is it?

Fence up to 5 km with little vegetation: For such a fence a low impulse energy is sufficient in most cases and therefore we recommend a fence energiser 9V with dry battery.

Fence length more than 5 km or shorter fence with heavy vegetation: Here you need a higher pulse energy. Under these conditions, a rechargable 12V energiser or a powerful mains energiser 230V with power connection the best choice for you.

Question 3: Do you have access to a power connection?

Yes, I have access to an power connection: In this case, a 230V mains energiser is always your best choice. Because the connection to the socket eliminates frequent battery changes and you have less maintenance work. In addition, a fence energiser with 230V is more efficient.

No, I don't have access to a power connection: In this case you need a 12V rechargeable battery energiser or a 9V battery unit. Here, however, you must change the battery every 2-4 weeks or replace it once every pasture season. However, if you are interested, you can add a solar module to these devices. The battery will then be recharged continuously and you will reduce your maintenance costs.

Question 4: Change pasture frequently or keep your fence in the same place?

Fence is used mobile: For smaller fences with little vegetation a light 9V fence energiser with dry battery is probably the right choice. If the fence is longer than 5 km or more overgrown it requires a more powerful 12V energiser with rechargeable battery.

Fence always stays in the same place: If you have access to a power outlet, a 230V electric fence with power connection is the best choice. Otherwise you can also use a 12V energiser with rechargeable battery (for longer fences or fences with stronger vegetation) a 9V energiser with dry batteries (for shorter fences with little vegetation).

Question 5: Do you have time to replace the battery every 2-4 weeks when fencing?

Yes, I have time: In this case you can safely grab a 12V electric fence with rechargeable batteries. However, if you have permanent access to a power outlet, we recommend a 230V electric fence with power supply.

No, I have too little time for this: If there is a socket outlet available, you should put on a 230V electric fence here. Alternatively you can supplement your 12V battery or 9V battery with a solar module.

What do you need for an electric fence besides an energiser?

Note for you: On request we will be happy to put together a electric fence complete package tailored to your needs. In this package we summarize the all required additional material for you and you don't have to worry about it yourself.

Fence post: In our shop you will find different posts made of plastic, wood, steel or fibreglass.

Fence insulators: An insulator separates the pasture fence from the conductive parts and prevents unexpected discharges into the ground.

Fence Conductor material: Conductor material made of plastic or metal ensures that the required current is distributed evenly over the fence.

Fence connectors: With a connector for your Pasture fence conductor material to a continuous chain.

Fence grounding: Your pasture fence must be properly grounded so that the current can flow unhindered from the ground to your pasture fence.

Fence Reels for mobile fences: On a reel you can roll up the conductor material of mobile fences.

Warning signs: According to law every electric pasture fence must be marked with warning signs along a öpublic path in regular intervals.

Electric Fence Tester & Controller: With a electric fence inspector you measure the voltage of your electric fence. This allows you to quickly determine whether the required voltage is available and whether your fence is safe.

Battery for energisers: These spare parts you will need to buy at 9V Devices with Battery resp. for 12V battery-powered fencer.
