Stable Rugs: Comfortable Warmth for Rest Periods

When temperatures drop in autumn and winter, clipped or cold-sensitive horses need support to maintain their body temperature in the stable. A well-fitting stable rug protects the horse from cool drafts and prevents the muscles from cooling down during rest periods. At the same time, it keeps the coat clean and prevents bedding like straw or shavings from sticking to the hair.

The Difference from Turnout Rugs

Unlike rain sheets, stable rugs do not require a waterproof membrane. This offers a significant advantage for the indoor climate: Because the fabric is more permeable to air, a stable rug provides much higher breathability. Body moisture is wicked away more effectively. The outer material is usually made of smooth, dirt-repellent polyester, allowing hay and bedding to easily slide off.

Various Fill Weights for Every Need

Stable rugs are available in various levels of warmth. Lightweight rugs with 50g to 100g filling are suitable for the transitional seasons or for unclipped horses in cool stables. For clipped sport horses in the depths of winter, models with 200g to 400g filling are the common choice. The lining, made of cotton or smooth nylon, protects the coat and prevents hair breakage on the shoulders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a horse wear a stable rug in the paddock?
Stable rugs are not waterproof. In case of precipitation, the fabric quickly soaks up water, which can lead to a dangerous drop in the horse's body temperature. A turnout rug should always be used outdoors.

How often should the rug be changed?
Horses spend many hours in the stable during winter. Therefore, it is advisable to regularly remove the rug, brush the coat, and check the skin. The rug itself should be washed as soon as the lining smells strongly of sweat or ammonia.

Are leg straps necessary in the stable?
Usually, a well-adjusted cross surcingle under the belly and a tail strap are sufficient for stable rugs. Leg straps are mostly not strictly necessary, as movement in the box is limited and the rug shifts less than in the pasture.
