Precise leverage and a mouth-friendly fit: The Waldhausen Pelham, double jointed

The Waldhausen Pelham, double jointed is an excellent choice for riders who want to combine precise control with a gentle touch. Unlike traditional mullen mouth bits, the double jointed mouthpiece flexes to better suit the anatomy of your horse's mouth. Pressure is distributed evenly across the tongue, which reliably prevents the uncomfortable "nutcracker" effect on the sensitive palate. This makes this model particularly popular for jumping and cross-country with horses that have a lot of forward urge but still need to be handled sensitively.

The design features side pieces of approx. 14 cm and a relatively short shank of approx. 6.5 cm, ensuring that rein aids provide quick but well-dosed leverage on the poll and lower jaw. Made from high-quality stainless steel, this bit is extremely durable, easy to care for, and completely rust-proof. Since stainless steel has a smooth surface and is tasteless, it doesn't artificially affect your horse's natural salivation—ideal for horses that prefer neutral equipment in their mouth. To ensure the best fit for different horses, the thickness is adjusted: bits with a width up to 12.5 cm have a thickness of 14 mm, while widths from 13.5 cm have a thickness of 16 mm.

Questions & Answers:

How do I use the Waldhausen Pelham, double jointed correctly with reins?
A Pelham gives you great flexibility with your rein setup: you can either ride with two pairs of reins (one pair in the large snaffle ring for normal contact, and one pair in the lower shank ring), or you can use Pelham straps (Delta straps). These connect both rings so you can conveniently ride with just one pair of reins.

What is the advantage of a shorter shank?
A shorter shank results in a shorter lever action. This means your aids reach the poll very quickly and directly, but the maximum leverage is much milder and less sharp than on models with long shanks. This allows for very fine, controlled dosing of your signals.
