Poultry Feeder - Clean Feed in Stock
A poultry feeder makes your daily work in the coop much easier. Instead of filling exact rations into bowls every day, you simply stock up the container with feed. The dry grains or pellets automatically slide down as soon as the animals eat from the lower trough. The clever design ensures that the feed always remains clean, dry, and protected from contamination by droppings. This way, your chickens, quails, or ducks always have access to fresh food, even if you are not home for a day.
Treadle Feeders Against Unwanted Guests
Especially in free-range keeping, open feeding places quickly become a magnet for mice, rats, or wild birds. This not only costs expensive feed but also carries the risk of disease transmission. The solution is a treadle feeder. Here, the feed flap only opens when an animal steps on the step in front of it. When the chicken or duck leaves the step, the flap closes firmly again. Rodents or small wild birds are too light to trigger the mechanism.
Hanging or Standing?
Classic round feeders made of plastic or metal can usually be placed on the floor as well as hung up. It is advisable to hang the feeder so that the feeding trough is at about the back height of the smallest animals. This effectively prevents the poultry from scratching bedding into the feed. For ducks, which do not like to eat from hanging structures, it is best to place the feeder slightly elevated on a clean stone or a small platform.
FAQ - Poultry Feeders
Which feed is suitable for the feeder?
Poultry feeders are intended exclusively for dry feed. This includes grains, seeds, laying mash, or pellets. Moist feed, soaked bread, or vegetable scraps would stick in the cylinder, mold, and block the mechanism. You should use a classic poultry trough for soft feed instead.
How big should the feeder be?
This depends on the number of your animals and how often you want to refill. A normal-sized chicken eats about 120 to 150 grams of dry food a day. With 10 chickens, a 5 kg feeder is therefore sufficient for a good three to four days. It is better to buy a slightly larger feeder so that you remain flexible.
How do I get my animals used to the treadle feeder?
Animals are sometimes a bit skeptical about new things. In the first few days, simply place a stone on the treadle so that the feed flap remains permanently open. As soon as the animals have understood where the food is, remove the stone. They usually learn to trigger the mechanism themselves within a few hours.
