The right machine for the load

For the daily trip into the barn, a wheelbarrow with 100 to 200 litres is usually enough. When loads get heavier or distances longer, carts with two wheels have the advantage, because you carry less and push more. For quantities you can no longer move by hand there are large volume skips for yard loaders and tractors, emptied mechanically or hydraulically. Bales travel best on a bale trailer with reinforced tyres that still rolls on soft ground.

Tyres, tubs and spare parts

The most common failure is not the machine but the tyre. Puncture proof wheels save you the patching and hold up on concrete as well as on gravel. Tubs are wearing parts too, and for many carts you can buy them separately in plastic or aluminium. Anyone moving a lot of feed is far better served by a closed, watertight tub, because leftovers rinse out easily and nothing sits in the bottom going sour.

One wheel or two wheels?
One wheel is more manoeuvrable and fits through narrow doors. Two wheels carry more weight and tip over less often, but they need a little more room when you are turning in tight aisles and in front of the barn door.

Which tub suits feed?
A closed, watertight plastic tub. You can rinse it out and it absorbs no moisture, unlike open mesh designs that trap residue in every corner.

Is a puncture proof tyre worth it?
On farms with gravel, wire and offcuts of timber it almost always is. The extra cost pays for itself by the second inner tube you did not have to change, and you are never stuck with a flat barrow.
