Poultry Mite Repellent: Effective Protection for Your Animals

Protect your poultry from the red fowl mite. Discover effective products for prevention and acute control in the coop.

Mite Repellent – Fighting the Invisible Bloodsuckers

The red fowl mite is probably the biggest enemy of every poultry keeper. The tiny parasites hide in the cracks of the coop during the day and attack chickens, quails, or ducks at night to suck blood. This causes enormous stress, anemia, a drastic drop in egg production, and in the worst case, death. Consistent poultry mite repellent is therefore mandatory all year round to keep the animals healthy and productive.

Diatomaceous Earth: The Miracle Cure from Nature

The basis of any successful mite prevention is diatomaceous earth (Kieselgur). This fine, purely natural powder consists of fossilized diatoms. If sprinkled in the coop on roosts, in nests, and in the dust bath, it works purely mechanically. The microscopic, sharp-edged particles damage the mites' shells and dry them out. Since no chemical neurotoxins are used, the mites cannot develop resistance. You can use it safely while the animals are in the coop.

Liquid Mite Sprays for Acute Infestations

If the mites have already multiplied greatly in the coop, powder alone is often not enough. This is where special liquid mite sprays come into play. They penetrate deep into the finest cracks in the wood where the parasites hide during the day. Many silicate-based sprays clog the mites' airways immediately upon drying. Spray bottles or pressure sprayers are ideal for hard-to-reach corners or for large-scale application.

FAQ - Mite Control

How do I recognize a mite infestation?

Mites are nocturnal. During the day, you often only see gray dust (mite droppings) under the roosts or on the coop walls. If your animals no longer want to go into the coop in the evening, are restless, or have very pale combs, you should check the roosts at night with a flashlight. If you spot small, crawling red or gray dots, you must act immediately.

What is the best way to apply diatomaceous earth?

You can apply diatomaceous earth dry or wet. When dry, it can be blown excellently into all cracks with a special duster bottle. You achieve particularly good adhesion to walls if you mix diatomaceous earth with water and paint or spray the coop with it. After drying, a fine, white protective film remains.

Can the animals stay in the coop during treatment?

That depends on the product used. Natural diatomaceous earth is harmless to poultry (however, you should wear a mask when dusting so as not to inhale the fine dust). With chemical biocides or liquid sprays, the animals often have to leave the coop for the duration of the application and drying. Always read the manufacturer's exact instructions on the label.
