Saddle Pads & Half Pads: Protection, Comfort, and Sweat Absorption
The saddle pad is the connecting element between the sensitive horse's back and the saddle. In equestrian sports, it fulfills several essential tasks: It protects the saddle leather from aggressive horse sweat, saves the horse's coat from friction, and, depending on the design, can absorb shocks and distribute the pressure of the rider's weight evenly. A good pad is therefore just as important for your horse's well-being as a well-fitting saddle.
The Right Model for Every Need
The selection of pads is large and depends on the respective intended use. If the primary goal is to absorb sweat and protect the equipment, classic pads made of cotton or breathable blended fabrics are used. If, on the other hand, the horse needs more padding or the musculature has temporarily changed, the setup is supplemented by pressure-relieving special half pads that have a direct shock-absorbing effect.
Care and Hygiene for a Healthy Back
Since saddle pads have direct contact with the horse's skin and absorb dust, sebum, and sweat, they must be cleaned regularly. Matted and hard fabrics lose their breathability and can cause painful chafing or blocked sebaceous glands. Regular changing and washing of the pads are therefore mandatory to maintain your horse's back health in the long term.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many saddle pads do you need?
Since the pads are often sweaty after riding and need to be washed regularly, you should have at least three to four pads to change for a horse that is ridden regularly. This way, you always have a fresh, dry pad ready.
What does it mean to pull the pad into the gullet?
When clearing the withers, the fabric of the pad is pulled up into the gullet (the spinal canal) of the saddle at the front of the withers and along the spine. This prevents the pad from pulling tightly over the withers and causing painful pressure or chafing.
Can a thick pad compensate for an ill-fitting saddle?
Thick pads can bridge small muscular deficits after a break from riding. However, they are not a permanent replacement for a well-fitting saddle. A saddle that is fundamentally too narrow will become even tighter and press harder with an additional, thick pad.
High-Quality Equipment for the Saddle Area
An optimal saddle fit is the basic prerequisite for a relaxed horse. In our assortment, you will find everything you need to equip your horse gently. Classic saddle pads & numnahs form the breathable base: They reliably absorb sweat, protect the saddle, and are easy to wash.
If your horse needs additional comfort, shock absorption, or temporary fit compensation, our half pads made of gel, memory foam, or real lambskin offer the ideal solution for pressure relief.
