Broom: The Right Bristle for Every Surface

A broom is a wearing item, and that is exactly why it pays to look at the system behind it. The models here have a wooden stock with a handle hole or a thread, so you only swap the head and keep the handle you already have. The second point is the bristle. It decides whether you pick up fine dust or get wet muck off concrete, and those two jobs need different material.

Which bristle for what

Elaston is the all rounder for outdoors. The synthetic bristle keeps its shape when wet, does not rot and copes with rough concrete. Arenga and piassava are natural fibres, a little softer and better at picking up damp dirt, which is why you find them on wide brooms and yard brooms. Horsehair is the finest option and is meant for dust and smooth floors, rice straw and coconut sit somewhere in between. For stubborn crusted dirt there is the steel wire broom, and the wide broom with a galvanised scraper edge brings sweeping and scraping together in one tool.

Width, handle and replacement heads

On a yard broom 40 centimetres is the usual size for farm yards, the wide sweeping broom goes considerably wider and pays off once the distances get longer. More important than any centimetre, though, is that handle and head belong together. We stock tool and broom handles in wood at 130 and 140 centimetres with a diameter of 24 millimetres, with and without a taper. For the water broom there are separate replacement heads, so there too you only swap the part that actually wears out and keep the rest in service.
