Calf Hutches & Igloos: Fresh air for healthy young calves

Housed outside, dry and free of draughts. Here you will find calf igloos, group igloos and matching fencing with accessories.

Calf Hutches & Igloos: Climate as a health factor

Calves cope with cold far better than with poor air. That is why calf igloos outdoors have been a fixed part of many farms for years. The animals lie dry and out of the draught, breathe fresh air and still have contact with their neighbours. In this section you will find single and group igloos along with fencing, panels and accessories.

Single igloo or group igloo

For the first weeks, single igloos with a fenced area in front work well. The calf can choose whether to lie inside or stand outside. Versions in PE with UV protection stand up to sun and weather for a long time and are easy to clean. For older calves there are group igloos in an XL version in which several animals lie together. Panels with a door, individual grid panels and small feed boxes for the fencing complete the set up. That way you can arrange the outdoor area to match your stock.

Siting, bedding and cleaning

Position the igloos with their backs to the main wind direction and choose a spot that dries out well. A steel threshold retrofit kit keeps the bedding inside the igloo and makes mucking out easier. Bed generously, and in winter clearly more, because a deep straw bed warms from below. After every batch, igloo and fencing should be cleaned, disinfected and allowed to dry. Moving the igloo to a new spot between two batches breaks the germ pressure further and is usually easy to do outdoors. Note the batch and cleaning for each igloo, then you keep track even with many places. A firm, well drained base under the igloo saves you a lot of work in wet weather.

Frequently asked questions

Is cold a problem for calves?
Calves cope well with dry cold that is free of draughts. Plenty of bedding matters, and a calf blanket where needed.

How do I site an igloo?
With its back to the main wind direction, on a spot that dries out well. Moving it after a batch helps hygiene.

When does a group igloo suit?
As soon as the calves move into the group. XL versions give several animals room to lie together.

Igloos and hutches for the calf area

Fresh air and a dry lying area matter more to calves than warmth, and that is exactly what igloos outdoors deliver. Single igloos with a fenced area in front give young calves the choice between a sheltered bed and the open air, while versions in PE with UV protection stand up to sun and weather and can be cleaned thoroughly. For older animals, group igloos in an XL version give several calves room to lie together. Panels with a door, individual grid panels and small feed boxes for the fencing complete the set up as needed. A steel threshold retrofit kit keeps the bedding inside the igloo and makes mucking out easier. After every batch, clean, disinfect and let everything dry. Leave enough space between the igloos so you can reach them all at feeding time.
