At night, your poultry is easy prey for foxes, martens, or raccoons. A solid coop made of sturdy wood or high-quality plastic with secure locks on the doors reliably protects your animals. In the evening, the ducks usually waddle into their safe house all by themselves as dusk falls – then all you have to do is lock the door.

Do ducks need roosting bars in the coop?

No, unlike chickens, ducks do not sleep elevated on roosting bars. They spend the night on the ground. A duck coop is therefore completely flat inside. It is sufficient to cover the floor generously with straw or highly absorbent hemp bedding.

Can I keep ducks and chickens in one coop?

While it is doable, it is not recommended. Ducks often make the coop very wet due to their behavior, which harms chickens as they need a very dry environment. Better to set up a separate duck house for the ducks.

Where should the duck coop be located?

Although ducks love water, the coop should not be placed directly on the edge of a pond on soft, wet ground, otherwise moisture will penetrate from below. Choose a slightly elevated, dry, and wind-protected spot in the run that is easily accessible for you to clean.
