Your dog's ears largely clean themselves. Even so, a regular look inside is worthwhile, especially for dogs with long floppy ears or lots of hair around the ear. Soft cotton buds remove dirt from the outer ear, while a mild care oil such as Ballistol Animal helps you gently loosen crusts. This keeps the ears clean and lets you notice any changes early.
Cleaning Correctly
Only clean the visible part, in other words the outer ear flap. This is where dust, bits of grass or a little earwax collect. Put some care oil on a cotton bud or a soft cloth and wipe carefully from the inside outwards. Important: cotton buds must never go into the ear canal. There you would only push dirt further in and could injure the sensitive ear. Afterwards, let your dog give its head a good shake, that's all part of it.
When to See the Vet
A healthy dog ear is pale inside, hardly smells and isn't red. Look out for warning signs such as an unpleasant smell, redness, dark deposits, frequent head shaking or scratching at the ear. If your dog tilts its head or flinches when you touch its ear, something isn't right either. In that case, don't treat it yourself but see your vet promptly so the ear can be examined properly.
