Fly Rugs: Extensive Insect Protection for the Pasture

When the insect season begins, many horses suffer from the constant approach of flies, horseflies, and midges. Constant tail swishing and restless pacing in the paddock are the result. A fly rug envelopes a large area of the horse's body and forms a mechanical barrier against insect bites without causing the horse to sweat on warm days.

Breathable Mesh Fabric and UV Protection

Fly rugs are made from a lightweight, close-meshed netting. This material allows air to circulate freely and prevents heat build-up under the rug. At the same time, the fabric is strong enough to stop insect proboscises from piercing through. Many models also offer integrated UV protection, which prevents fading in dark-coated horses and protects light-skinned horses from sunburn.

Fit and Extended Protection

For comprehensive protection, many fly rugs are equipped with an integrated or detachable neck cover. A wide belly flap also protects the horse's sensitive midline, where midges prefer to attach themselves. Generous shoulder gussets and a long tail flap ensure that freedom of movement in the pasture is not restricted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do many fly rugs have a zebra pattern?
Scientific studies have shown that the striped pattern irritates the compound eyes of horseflies and flies. The insects cannot focus on a landing spot and often turn away before settling on the horse. This naturally enhances protection.

Can the horse wear the fly rug in the rain?
Normal fly rugs are not waterproof. If they become soaked with water during heavy rain, the horse cools down quickly due to evaporative cooling. In unsettled weather, a waterproof combination rug (fly and rain rug in one) is recommended instead.

What size rug does my horse need?
The size of the fly rug is determined, like all horse rugs, by the back length. Measure from the highest point of the withers along the spine to the root of the tail.

Functional Protection During the Insect Season

The warm season often brings stress for horses due to swarming insects. A well-fitting fly rug provides relief here. The close-meshed material physically shields the body and prevents bites from triggering skin irritation or allergic reactions. Since the fabric is highly breathable, the body climate remains comfortably regulated even on midsummer days.
