Stripes seem to confuse horseflies when they try to land. The pattern alone does not offer complete protection. Combined with mesh fabric and an insect spray, it is a useful addition.

Can the fly rug stay on in the rain?
Most fly rugs are not waterproof and will soak through. In a short shower that is not a problem, but in prolonged rain it is better to take it off. There are also combination models with rain protection on top.
