The ground rod, or earth stake, is the link between the energizer and the soil. Current flows back to the energizer through it whenever an animal touches the fence. For this to work reliably, the rod must sit deep enough in moist soil and keep good contact over time. Galvanised steel stands up to moisture and weather and stays conductive for many years.
The Right Shape for Your Soil
A T-profile has a large surface area and can be driven in easily without twisting. Rods with a crossbar can be pushed in comfortably with your foot or a hammer and pulled out again just as easily. Two-part earth stakes are practical to transport and, once assembled, reach deeper layers of soil. For mobile battery energizers there are carrying and mounting stakes that hold the unit and earth it at the same time.
Setting It Correctly
Choose a spot for the earth stakes where the soil stays moist even in summer, for example in the shade or in a dip. With stronger energizers, use several rods a few metres apart and connect them with a continuous earth cable. Keep a good distance from water pipes and other earthing systems. Check the clamps regularly for rust and a firm fit.
Frequently asked questions
How many ground rods do I need for my electric fence?
That depends mainly on the output of the energizer and on the soil. Small battery units often manage with one or two stakes, while powerful mains or battery energizers need considerably more. If in doubt, add one more stake.
How far apart should the earth stakes be?
As a rule of thumb, a few metres apart, with around three metres being a good guide. That way each stake uses its own area of soil and the effect adds up. If the stakes are too close together, an extra one adds very little.
Can I use a copper rod as a ground rod?
Copper conducts well, but it should not be mixed with galvanised parts because the metals attack each other through corrosion. It is best to stick to one material for stakes, cables and clamps. Galvanised earth stakes have proven themselves on electric fences.
