Wind Protection Curtains: A Better Barn Climate at Gates and Openings
Cattle tolerate cold well, draughts far less so. Gateways, driveways and open barn sides are exactly where draughts arise most often. Wind protection curtains slow the airflow without blocking ventilation as a whole. Daylight stays in the barn, the passage stays clear, and you save yourself the constant opening and closing. That improves the barn climate with a manageable amount of effort.
Strip curtains and film panels
The classic PVC strip curtain is made up of individual strips that overlap. Animals and vehicles pass through, the wind is slowed, and insects largely stay outside. The strips come in various widths, with around 30 centimetres being common, cut to length to suit the height of the opening. For swing doors there are complete film panels, which are transparent and let plenty of daylight in. Damaged individual strips can be replaced later without rebuilding the whole curtain.
Fitting and accessories
How long a curtain lasts depends on the way it is hung. Stainless steel hook rails do not rust in a damp barn climate and hold the strips securely. Where the curtain is meant to slide aside, trolleys and rail systems come into play. Measure the width and height of the opening carefully before ordering and plan in the overlap of the strips, because that is what decides how well the wind is held back. At the bottom, the curtain should almost reach the floor without dragging on it. Clean the panels now and then and the view through stays clear.
