In summer the pasture gets restless. Flies, clegs and external parasites cost the animals grazing time, drive them into the shade and can make wounds worse. When you spray and what to watch
The best moment is before the pressure gets too high. Once the animals bunch up, throw their heads about or stop grazing in peace, you are usually already late. Spray on a quietly standing animal, keep clear of eyes, mouth and nose, and treat the places where insects gather: head, back, belly line and legs. Read the leaflet before every use, because rate, withdrawal period and area of use are laid down there and are binding. On freshly shorn animals the skin is more sensitive, so work sparingly. And do not spray in the full midday sun; early morning or evening works better.
The animal alone is rarely enough
A spray works only as long as it stays on the animal. Lasting relief comes when you also go after the breeding sites: take out wet bedding regularly, do not leave muck standing too long, and change standing water in troughs and containers. Shade out on the pasture helps as well, because the animals can then dodge the hot hours. One thing to be clear about: these products work on the outside. Internal parasites, so stomach and gut worms and liver fluke, are a different job. They need a dung sample and a treatment your vet decides on.
