Polywire – Thin Conductor Material for the Electric Fence
Polywire consists of robust plastic threads woven with fine metal wires. It is lightweight, flexible, and can be spooled very easily. This makes it the ideal conductor material for mobile fences that are often moved, or for quickly subdividing large pastures.
The most important properties of polywire:
- Conductivity: Woven conductors made of stainless steel or copper ensure that the current flows.
- Tear resistance: The plastic mesh absorbs the tensile forces and keeps the fence stable.
- Easy handling: Polywire is thin and light. It can be easily tensioned, rolled up, and transported.
Which Animals is Polywire Suitable For?
Polywire is excellent for cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry. It is also frequently used to deter wild animals. However, conventional polywire is not recommended for horses. Because the material is very thin, it can easily cut into horses if they panic and cause severe injuries. Wide electric fence tape or thick polyrope are the better choices for horse pastures.
What Should I Look For When Buying?
Pay particular attention to the electrical resistance, which is given in Ohms/m. The lower the Ohm value, the better the polywire conducts electricity. For long fences or fences with a lot of vegetation, you absolutely need a polywire with very good conductivity (low resistance) so that enough electricity arrives at the end of the fence to ensure herding safety.
FAQs about Polywire
How do I repair a broken polywire?
If a polywire breaks, you must never simply tie it back together in a knot. With a knot, the fine metal wires inside often do not touch properly, and the flow of electricity is interrupted. Always use special wire connectors (e.g., Litzclip) to connect the ends cleanly and conductively.
Which conductors are better: stainless steel or copper?
Stainless steel is very robust, durable, and does not break easily, but it conducts electricity slightly less well. Copper conducts electricity excellently, but is softer. Premium polywires often combine both materials to optimally combine durability and conductivity.
How many rows of polywire do I need?
That depends on the species. For cattle, 1 to 2 rows are often sufficient, while for sheep (due to the thick wool) you should tension 3 to 4 rows at different heights.
Durable Polywire for Your Electric Fence
A good polywire must withstand wind and weather. With us, you will find polywires in various thicknesses, colors, and quality levels – suitable for small strip grazing up to kilometer-long permanent fences. Make sure to select the conductor material to match your fence length so that the current is equally strong everywhere. Always use the appropriate insulators and connectors for tensioning and repairing to prevent arcing and keep the fence secure.
