Ring insulators consist of a plastic ring on a metal shank that you screw into the timber post. With a driver bit for your cordless drill it is much faster than by hand. Pre drilling makes sense in hard wood so that the post does not split.

At what height should I fit the ring insulators?
That depends on the animals. For cattle the top strand sits at about chest height, while for sheep several strands sit closer together and lower down. It is best to measure against one of your animals.
