A silage sheet keeps the air out reliably as long as it is undamaged. It is thin, though, and everything that comes from above goes straight at it: hailstones, crows trying their luck on the smooth surface, cats walking over it, branches in a storm. A single hole is enough for air to circulate under the cover. The protection grille takes that load so the sheet does not have to.
220 or 240 grams
The grilles here are 220 and 240 grams per square metre. That weight tells you how dense and how heavy the fabric is. The heavier grille at 240 grams takes more punishment and lies quieter of its own accord, even in wind. The 220 gram version is easier to handle and makes sense where the clamp is opened more often or where the main job is keeping birds off. Neither one replaces the sheet, they protect it. And both still need weight on top, usually gravel bags, so the whole assembly stays where you put it.
Laying it correctly
The grille goes straight onto the sheet with no gap, otherwise it lifts in the wind and chafes. Pull it far enough over the clamp edge at the sides that it can be weighted down as well, and then put the bags on the grille rather than on the bare sheet. That spreads the weight and keeps pressure points off the sheet along the edges. When you open the face, fold back only the area you actually need and leave everything else weighted down. The smaller the open area, the less air reaches the rest of the silage. Roll the grille up at the end of the season instead of bundling it, and it goes back out next year without twists.
