Spelt husks are a popular litter for chicken coops and barns. The husks of spelt are also suitable as a raw fibre-rich additive in animal feed.
Spelt husk is a popular litter for laying nests among many livestock farmers. Spelt husks are the shells of spelt. During harvesting and subsequent dehusking, the husk (= shell) is removed from the spelt grain. The husks are dust-free and are perfectly suited as bedding in the stable due to their high absorbency. The soft, fragrant spelt husks are also popular as pillow filling.
This handy 8 kg bag can be carried around without any problems and the husks spread wonderfully in all corners of a chicken house. Unlike hay or straw, neither nests nor mats nor lumps form in a chicken litter. Cleaning up is therefore easy with spelt husks. Everything can be cleaned nicely with a small shovel. Chicken keepers are very enthusiastic about spelt as a litter for the chicken coop, because in winter, when the animals are in the coop a lot, the chickens also have something to look for/peck at. There are always grains hiding in the husks that want to be found and are very popular.
The husks of spelt are also very suitable as an admixture in the feed for horses, cattle, cows and other farm animals. The husks contain a lot of raw fibre and little energy, so they can be fed as a healthy supplement to roughage. Spelt husks are more structured than oats and are often offered to horses with allergies or heavy feeds. Spelt husk is extremely satiating and encourages a long chewing time. However, in large quantities it can strain the stomach and intestines.
