Paddock Mats: Firm Ground Instead of Mud
In autumn and spring, turnout areas quickly turn into a mud bath. Paddock mats stabilise the ground, spread the weight of the horses and let rainwater drain away through holes or studs. Hooves stay drier, the risk of slipping falls, and you no longer have to wade through mud. Here you will find rubber mats and the perforated paddock mat in soft PVC.
Rubber or Soft PVC
The 2.4 cm Belmondo paddock mat made from rubber has a studded structure for drainage and can be driven over with a yard loader. It suits the paddock and the wash bay. The Belmondo Flix perforated mat measuring 110 x 175 cm keeps field gateways, tracks and access routes passable and is also suitable for cattle. The UNIVERSAL paddock mat in soft PVC can be laid without a sub-base, with either the perforated or the grid side facing up. The perforated arena mat drains water and also works in turnout areas.
Where Paddock Mats Make the Biggest Difference
Mud forms where horses gather. At the field gateway, around water troughs and hay racks and in front of the field shelter, the ground gets churned up the most. These are exactly the spots where a few mats make the biggest difference. On tracks, perforated mats let your horses reach the field with dry hooves. Access routes used by wheelbarrows or tractors also stay firm. So you do not have to surface the whole turnout area straight away but can start with the problem spots.
Frequently asked questions
Can I lay paddock mats without a sub-base?
On firm, level ground yes, especially lightweight soft PVC mats. On soft or clay soil, mats without a sub-base will sink in over time. In that case a base layer of hardcore or grit is worthwhile so that water can drain downwards.
What is the difference between paddock mats and paddock grids?
Paddock mats are ready-made rubber or PVC mats that your horse walks on directly. Paddock grids are filled with sand, grit or wood chips and stabilise the ground. Mats are quicker to lay, while grids work well for large areas.
Do paddock mats get slippery in winter?
Thanks to the perforated and studded structure, they stay grippy even when wet. In frost, ice can form as on any surface, and you grit it as usual. Because the water drains away, however, fewer frozen puddles form.
Paddock Mats for Turnout, Field and Arena
A muddy paddock is a nuisance for horse and owner alike. Hooves are constantly standing in the wet, coats get dirty and every trip to the hay rack becomes a slide. Paddock mats create a stable walking surface that drains water and does not turn into mud. Studded rubber mats are heavy and stay firmly in place, while perforated soft PVC mats are light and quick to lay. At field gateways, on tracks and around the field shelter, this means noticeably less dirt carried into the stable straight away. In arenas and cattle turnout areas, the mats also make the ground more resilient. You can start small and extend the area bit by bit, just as your paddock needs. Your horse will thank you with clean, dry hooves, and you will spend less time grooming and mucking out.
