The cage magnet in its sturdy plastic housing should be given to all healthy cattle in good time as a preventive measure. Its magnetic force is strong enough to collect ferrous foreign bodies such as nails, wire or metal splinters in the reticulum and hold them securely within the cage.

Foreign bodies hidden in feed pose a significant risk to cattle, which do not feed selectively. They enter the reticulum, where reticular contractions needed to mix and move feed onward can cause them to pierce the stomach wall. This typically leads to an infection of the abdominal cavity with an inflammatory reaction that can also damage surrounding organs. Early administration of a foreign body magnet – ideally already given preventively to young, healthy animals – can effectively prevent this condition, and the magnet usually remains in the animal for life.
