Solar power for your horse paddock: AKO Sun Power S 250 solar electric fence energiser
The AKO Sun Power S 250 is a compact solar electric fence energiser for horse paddocks, turnout areas and smaller fence systems without vegetation. The fixed 3 W solar panel keeps the 12 V AGM battery with 5 Ah charged, so you do not need a socket on the pasture. Energiser, battery and panel form one unit that you set up directly by the fence or attach to a post.
An integrated charge control with microcontroller monitors the battery and keeps the fence live even through longer rainy spells, with a full battery for up to 2 weeks without sun. If the battery voltage drops below 11,2 V, the deep discharge protection kicks in and the red LED flashes. Using the supplied 230 V power supply you can recharge the battery when needed or keep it on maintenance charge over the winter.

Questions & answers:
Is the S 250 also enough for sheep, goats or cattle in winter coat?
Probably not. For animals with dense coats or wool at least 4.000 V should be on the fence, while the S 250 delivers 2.800 V under load. For these animals you are better off with a stronger energiser with more joules.
What do the 0,40 joules tell me, and is that enough?
The 0,40 J is the energy the energiser stores for every pulse, and 0,25 J of that reaches the fence as a shock. This pulse energy determines how clearly the animals feel the fence and how well it copes with vegetation, the voltage alone says little about it. For short, clear horse fences that is plenty, for long or heavily overgrown fences an energiser with more joules is the better choice.
How many earth rods do I need and where do I put them?
For the S 250 one earth rod with a length of 1 m is enough, which you drive fully into moist ground, at a distance from buildings. If the ground is dry or sandy, set additional rods at least 3 m apart and connect them to each other. Weak earthing is one of the most common causes of too little shock strength on the fence.
