Buckwheat is one of the so-called pseudo-cereals and is naturally gluten-free. The grain contains vitamins E, B1 and B2 as well as potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium and silicic acid. For dogs fed a wheat-free or gluten-free diet, hulled buckwheat is a common alternative to wheat, and the fine grains are widely used for baking dog treats.

Buckwheat has a nutty taste and is taken very readily as bird feed – by budgies, pigeons and parrots as well as by chickens. Acceptance among rabbits and rodents is excellent too. Its content of lysine and dietary fibre complements the usual ration.
