Compact power for short fences: AKO Compact Power N 700 mains electric fence energiser 230V

The AKO Compact Power N 700 is a handy mains electric fence energiser for 230 V that you connect directly to the socket. It is made for short fences with little vegetation, for example at the paddock, the horse pasture near the stable, in the garden or at the fish pond against herons. With it you contain horses, cattle, pigs and poultry and keep dogs, cats or hares away.

The 1 joule of stored energy is the energy the energiser stores for every pulse. Of that, 0,55 joules reach the fence as a pulse. This pulse energy decides how clearly your animals feel the fence, especially when grass touches the wire. The voltage alone says little about it. Using the integrated bracket you hang the energiser on the wall. Outdoors it needs a spot that is protected from rain and direct sun.

Overview:

  • Suits short fences: up to 7 km without vegetation, up to 1 km with medium vegetation
  • Costs around 2,80 euros of electricity a year in continuous use (at 35 cents per kWh)
  • Spot faults quickly: if the LED does not flash, check the power supply first
  • Vegetation lowers the voltage, so check your fence regularly with a fence tester
  • Short electric pulses: unpleasant but harmless; put up the warning sign along public paths

Questions & answers:

How many volts does a horse fence need, and can the energiser manage it?
For horses there should be at least around 2.500 V on the fence, for cattle in winter coat more like 4.000 V. On a short, clean fence the N 700 manages this well, with 7.500 V at no load. Under high load such as dense vegetation the voltage drops as low as 1.600 V, so keep the wire clear.

Can I hang the energiser outside on the stable?
Yes, the housing is UV- and weather-resistant and has a bracket for wall mounting. Outdoors, still choose a spot under a canopy or in a protective box where neither rain nor blazing sun can reach. The socket should be suitable for outdoor use.

How do I earth the energiser correctly?
For the N 700 one earth rod with a length of 1 m is enough, which you drive as fully as possible into moist ground, away from buildings. If the ground is dry or sandy, set additional earth rods at least 3 m apart and connect them to each other. Weak earthing is the most common reason for too little voltage on the fence.

How many ground rods do I need? When using several rods, keep a distance of at least 3 metres between each one. Why should the ground rod be galvanised?Rust has an insulating effect and hinders the voltage return to the fence energiser – galvanised steel prevents this.
