Carriage Driving: Harness, bits and accessories for horse and cart

When driving, every piece from harness to reins has to fit reliably. Here you will find equipment for single harness driving, ponies and the driving seat.

Carriage Driving: well harnessed on the road

In carriage driving, the horse carries no weight on its back but pulls the carriage through the harness. That is why everything needs to fit well and be securely connected. In our range you will find single harnesses for ponies and Shetlands, driving bridles and driving bits with several rings, a Liverpool bit, single driving reins, saddle pads for the harness saddle, harness racks, safety shackles and knee rugs for the driving seat.

Harness and bit

The harness spreads the pulling force across the horse's body via a breastplate or collar. A well fitted harness saddle with a soft pad prevents pressure points on the back. Driving bits often have several rings or slots into which you buckle the reins depending on the contact you want. The Liverpool bit is a classic in carriage driving. Ask an experienced driver to help you choose and adjust it.

Safety on the box

Check buckles, stitching and connections before every drive. Stainless steel safety shackles hold important connections reliably. Soft single driving reins sit comfortably in the hand and give you a good feel for your horse's mouth. With a warm knee rug or a waterproof one, you stay comfortable on the box even in chilly weather. Harness racks in the tack room keep the harness tidy and stop straps from cracking.

Frequently asked questions

Can any horse be driven?
In principle yes, provided it is healthy and gradually introduced to driving. Training takes time and belongs in experienced hands. A driving course is also worthwhile for you as the driver.

How can I tell whether the harness fits properly?
The breastplate lies horizontally above the point of the shoulder and leaves the windpipe free. The harness saddle sits behind the withers without pressing. After a drive, you should not find any rubs or dry patches in the sweat.

What is the difference between a snaffle and a Liverpool bit for driving?
A driving snaffle acts directly, much like a riding bit. A Liverpool bit has a leverage effect that is stronger or milder depending on where you buckle the reins. Which bit suits depends on the horse, its training and how you use it.

Everything for carriage, harness and driver

Whether it is a leisurely drive with your pony, single harness driving for pleasure or training for your next driving competition, your equipment has to work reliably. Synthetic harnesses are easy to care for and also suitable for small ponies and Shetlands. Driving bridles, driving bits with several rings and the Liverpool bit give you different options for buckling the reins. Soft single driving reins sit comfortably in the hand, and a fleece pad under the harness saddle protects your horse's back. On the box, knee rugs and waterproof driving aprons keep you warm and dry, while harness racks keep the tack room tidy. Check every connection before you set off. That way you can drive safely and calmly, on country lanes just as much as in the driving arena.
