Whether it is a mini competition, a lead rein class or a club show, the right competition clothing makes children feel they truly belong. The classic look is a dark show jacket, a white show shirt and pale breeches. A children's show jacket is made from stretchy, often washable fabric so it comes up clean again even after a dusty day at a show. It has a slim fit without pulling across the shoulders and is comfortable to wear over a show shirt. White show shirts usually have a stand up collar with poppers and look neat even without a jacket. A stock, plain or with a little diamanté, completes the outfit nicely.

Getting ready for show day

Try on the complete outfit a few days beforehand, including the riding hat, gloves and boots. That way you will find out in good time if anything pinches or has become too small. On the way to the warm up, a jacket protects the show jacket from dust. Does my child need a show jacket for their first competition?

Can I buy a show jacket with room to grow?
A little room is fine, but it should not be too big, as it will look untidy and flap while riding. The sleeves must not cover the hands. Stretchy styles usually fit for a while longer.

How do I keep the white show shirt clean?
Put it on shortly before the class and let your child wear a jacket or an old shirt over it until then. Treat stains with ox gall soap straight after the show. Do not use chlorine bleach on technical fabrics.
