Good children's riding breeches are stretchy, have flat inner seams and give a secure hold in the saddle thanks to grip at the knee or seat. Especially while their balance is still developing, silicone grip helps children sit more quietly. What children's breeches need to do

Children are always on the move at the yard: mounting, dismounting, grooming and carrying the saddle. Their breeches must therefore stretch and must not slip down when they bend over. A full seat gives plenty of grip in the saddle, while knee grip allows more feel for the pony. Flat seams stop delicate skin on the knees and calves from getting sore. A comfortable, fairly high waistband with belt loops keeps the breeches in place all day long.

For summer and winter

In summer, light and breathable fabrics are pleasant to wear. For winter there are winter breeches made from softshell with a warm lining. Thermal overtrousers simply go on over normal breeches when it is really cold in the indoor school or out hacking, and come off again before the lesson starts. That way children do not get cold and still stay supple in the saddle.

How much growing room should children's breeches have?
A little extra length is fine, but the breeches should not be baggy. Breeches that are too wide crease and rub while riding. Many styles are stretchy enough to grow with your child for a few months.

Does my child need proper breeches straight away?
For the first few lessons, close fitting leggings without thick seams are enough. Once your child rides regularly, breeches with grip are much more comfortable and give more hold. By the time longer hacks come along, your child will definitely notice the difference.

How often should children's breeches be washed?
After every day at the yard when they have got properly dirty. Wash them inside out at 30 degrees without fabric softener and the silicone grip will last longer. Two pairs in rotation are practical so one is always dry.
