Children spend a lot of time outdoors at the yard, grooming, leading, feeding and of course in the saddle. Good jackets for young riders keep out wind and cold while still allowing plenty of freedom of movement. Children's riding jackets should not have long drawcords that could get caught on something. Hoods are best detachable or lie flat so they cannot slip under the riding hat. Reflective details are important in winter when it gets dark early and your child comes home from the yard in the dark. How warmly should a child be dressed for riding?
Children warm up while riding but cool down quickly while waiting and grooming. Several thin layers are therefore better than one thick jacket. That way your child can take off a layer when they get warm.

Can my child wear a hood while riding?
A hood has no place under a riding hat, because the hat will not sit properly. It should lie flat at the back of the neck or be removed. For cold days there are headbands and winter kits for the riding hat.

Which jacket fits over a body protector?
It is best to try the jacket on with the body protector and go up a size if in doubt. It must close easily and must not pull while riding. Gilets are often the simpler option over a body protector.
