Clipper Heads: Cutter and Comb as One Unit
The clipper head is the part that does the actual work. Cutter and comb run against each other inside it and part the hair, while the machine only supplies the drive. If the finish turns streaky or the unit pulls at the coat, it is almost always the cutting set and not the motor. A second head in the cupboard keeps you working, and it sets the cutting length at the same time.
Only the Matching Head Fits
A clipper head is not a universal part. Every model range has its own mounting, so the first question is always which machine model you have. The Aesculap GT608 and GT608D are meant for the Exacta and the Isis, the Aesculap Econom comes with a blade set included, and there is a dedicated head for the Favorita. Wahl works with the Snap-On system: the Prime Series with a hardened steel blade swaps over quickly, and there is a coarse head for the Arco and the Adelar. From Clipster there are the CuttoX and DropiX in stainless steel, and from Waldhausen a replacement head. Check the type designation on your machine before ordering and it will fit first time.
DLC Coating and Cutting Length
Several Aesculap heads, among them the GT608, GT608D and SnapOn, carry a DLC coating. This diamond-like layer sits on the blade and slows wear, particularly when sand and dust are sitting in the coat. The second point is the cutting length: it is built into the head and decides how short the hair is left. On a horse in winter coat you can go coarser, on fine dog hair rather finer. If you clip both, two heads on one machine take you further than two machines.
