Cooler Rugs: Essential Protection Against Chilling
If a horse sweats heavily after a strenuous workout, a high-quality cooler rug (or sweat rug) is essential. It protects the heated horse from dangerous drafts and prevents the muscles from cooling down too quickly. A wet coat loses temperature extremely rapidly in cold air, which can lead to severe tension, colds, or back problems.
The Wicking Effect: How the Rug Works
Most cooler rugs are made of special fleece or microfiber material. These fabrics use a wicking effect: the horse's body heat pushes the moisture from the coat outwards through the fabric. There, the sweat collects in the form of small water droplets on the outside of the rug and evaporates, while the horse remains comfortably warm and dry underneath.
Versatile in Everyday Stable Life
Cooler rugs are true all-rounders. They are suitable not only for the phase after riding but also for warming up before training when the muscles are still stiff on cold winter days. In addition, they serve excellently as travel rugs in the trailer to protect the horse from drafts or after a bath on warmer days to speed up drying.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long should a cooler rug stay on the horse?
The rug should stay on the horse until the coat underneath is completely dry (usually 30 to 60 minutes). If the rug is left on for hours after that, the moisture on the outside can be drawn back inside, and the horse will definitely get cold.
Do I need a rug with a neck cover?
For horses that sweat heavily on the neck or are clipped, a cooler rug with a (often detachable) neck cover is highly recommended. This prevents the sensitive neck muscles from cooling down and getting stiff.
How do I wash fleece rugs without losing their function?
Wash cooler rugs in the machine at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) and strictly avoid fabric softener! Fabric softener clogs the fine pores of the fleece material, destroying the moisture transport (wicking effect).
The Most Important Rug in Your Equipment
A sweaty horse must never be put into a cold box or paddock without protection. Cooler rugs ensure that moisture is quickly drawn out of the coat while the body heat remains with the horse. In this way, you protect the sensitive horse's back from painful tension and colds.
