Double Bridle: a bridle for bridoon and curb
The double bridle, also known as a Weymouth bridle, carries two bits: a slim bridoon and a curb bit. That is why it has two pairs of cheekpieces and is ridden with two pairs of reins. It belongs to advanced dressage training, once a horse goes in a secure, relaxed and even contact in the snaffle. Here you will find Waldhausen X-Line Evermore and Supersoft, S-Line Magic and Timeless as well as BUSSE LUXURY and SOLIBEL.
When a curb bit makes sense
The curb bit is not a tool for controlling a horse. Its purpose is to refine aids the horse has already learnt. Riders need an independent seat for this and a quiet hand that can use both pairs of reins separately. Many trainers only ride in the double bridle on some days and carry on working in the snaffle the rest of the time. For your first steps, have someone with you who has experience with the double bridle.
Fitting bridle and bits
The bridoon sits slightly higher in the mouth and the curb below it, without the two touching. The curb chain lies flat in the chin groove, and when the rein is taken up the shanks of the curb should not come back further than about 45 degrees. A crank noseband or a plain cavesson without a flash strap belongs with a double bridle. Padded headpieces spread the extra pressure of two sets of cheekpieces.
Frequently asked questions
When is my horse ready for a double bridle?
When it goes in a secure contact in the snaffle, bends well and knows collected movements. There is no fixed age. What counts is the level of training of both horse and rider.
Do I need special reins for a double bridle?
Yes, you need two pairs of reins. The curb rein is usually a little narrower than the snaffle rein, so both sit comfortably in the hand. You will find both in our reins category.
How tight should the curb chain be?
It should lie flat in the chin groove and only come into play when the shanks are drawn back to about 45 degrees. Two fingers should fit flat between chain and chin. A twisted curb chain presses at single points and needs to be laid flat.
Double bridles for advanced dressage
A double bridle carries a bridoon and a curb bit at the same time. That is why it has two pairs of cheekpieces and is ridden with two pairs of reins. It comes into play once your horse goes in a secure contact in the snaffle and the two of you want to refine your aids further. On this page you will find double bridles from the Waldhausen X-Line in the Evermore and Supersoft versions, the Magic and Timeless models from the S-Line and the BUSSE LUXURY and SOLIBEL double bridles. Padded headpieces and soft nosebands help to spread the additional pressure evenly. When fitting, the key points are that both bits lie quietly in the mouth without touching and that the curb chain lies flat in the chin groove. If you are new to the double bridle, ideally have your trainer with you.
