Eye Care: well looked after in dust and wind
Horses' eyes are large, sit at the side of the head and have a lot to cope with in the stable and in the field: dust from hay and bedding, pollen, wind and flies. Gentle eye care can help moisten the area around the eye and soothe irritated eyes. When eye care makes sense
Many owners use care products in dusty conditions, after long journeys, in windy fields or during fly season. Drops go straight into the eye, while a spray is often easier to use on horses that are head shy. Keep the area around the eyes clean, wipe away tear tracks with a soft, clean cloth and use a separate cloth for each eye. A fly mask gives extra protection from annoying insects.
When to call the vet
Eyes are delicate and changes can become serious quickly. If your horse is squinting, its eye is watering heavily, looks cloudy or red, or the eyelids are swollen, please call your vet promptly. Care products are no substitute for an examination. Never put anything in your horse's eye that is intended for another purpose without speaking to your vet first.
Frequently asked questions
My horse has watery eyes. Should I be worried?
Slight watering in wind or dust is often harmless. If it lasts longer, the eye is half closed, red or cloudy, or there is a pus-like discharge, your vet should take a look. The sooner, the better.
How do I give my horse eye drops?
Stand to the side of your horse's head, gently pull down the lower lid and drop the liquid in from the side, into the pocket under the lid, without touching the eye. A second person holding the head makes it easier. Reward your horse afterwards.
Can I bathe my horse's eyes with chamomile tea?
This is generally not recommended, because tea can contain tiny particles that irritate the eye further. To clean around the eyes, a soft, clean cloth with plain water is enough. For the eye itself, suitable care products are the better choice.
