Many horses shake their heads when ridden because midges and flies are buzzing around their ears. A fly veil, also known as an ear bonnet, is worn under the headpiece of the bridle and covers the ears with a light fabric. At the same time it can muffle noise, which noticeably helps nervous horses in unfamiliar surroundings, in the indoor arena or at a show.

Material and styles

Fly veils are usually crocheted or made of cotton with elastic ears in stretch material. A coloured trim or cord adds a stylish touch to match the saddle pad and bandages. Models with sound-dampening padding in the ears are designed for noise-sensitive horses. Versions with fringes also keep flies away from the eyes. There are dedicated sizes for ponies, cobs and full sized horses, so every head gets a good fit.

Fitting it correctly

Pull the veil over the ears before putting on the bridle and lay it flat on the poll and forehead. Then put the bridle on over it. The ears should stand freely and not be squashed. Make sure the veil does not interfere with your horse's field of vision. Get your horse used to it in the stable first before you ride in it. At shows, the rules of your governing body apply. After riding, let the veil dry and wash it in a laundry bag when needed.

Does a fly veil help with headshaking?
If a horse shakes its head because of insects, a veil can bring relief. Headshaking can have other causes too, though. If the head shaking persists, ask your vet to find the reason.

What size do I need for my horse?
The size usually follows the bridle size, so pony, cob or full. What matters is that the ears have enough room and the edge does not reach over the eyes. If your horse is between sizes, try one on.
