Which power supply suits you?
The energiser decides how much fence you can keep live. A mains energiser is powerful and low maintenance but needs a socket within reach. On remote fields, 9V or 12V battery energisers run independently of the mains, and a solar panel makes the battery last considerably longer. Short, mobile fences for shows or trail rides manage with small battery units that fit easily into your luggage.
What makes a good set
Besides the energiser, a complete fence needs posts, insulators, conductor material, gate handles and an earth. For horses, wide and highly visible polytape is especially suitable, because horses notice it early even at full gallop. Sets with T posts are sturdy and quick to put in, while netting sets with power give you a boundary that is ready to use straight away. After setting up, check the voltage at several points along the fence.

Which energiser do I need for horses?
That depends on the length of the fence, how much grass touches it and whether there is mains power. If a socket is nearby, a 230V energiser is usually the simplest choice. On remote fields, battery or rechargeable units with a solar panel are very practical.
How much voltage should a horse fence carry?
As a rule of thumb, you should measure at least 2,000 volts at every point of the fence. With a thick winter coat or dry ground, a bit more is welcome. A fence tester lets you check regularly that the voltage is sufficient.
Why is earthing so important?
Without a good earth the circuit cannot close properly, and your horse will barely feel a pulse. Drive the earth stakes deep enough into the ground at a spot that is as damp as possible, and on dry ground use several stakes spaced apart. A weak earth is one of the most common reasons for a weak fence.
