Plastic Posts & Stakes: Quick to Place, Safely Insulated
Plastic posts and stakes are the first choice when your grazing needs to stay mobile. The material does not conduct electricity, and the loops for polywire, polyrope and polytape are moulded right in. That means you do not need any extra insulators. You simply press the step-in post into the ground with your foot on the tread. This saves a lot of time if you regularly give cattle, sheep or horses a fresh strip of grass.
Height and Loops to Suit Your Animals
Short posts of around 70 cm suit low fences and work as supports between taller posts. At around 105 to 110 cm you cover most cattle and sheep fences. For horses, choose tall posts of around 156 to 158 cm so the top polywire or polytape sits high enough. Plenty of loops one above the other give you flexibility: you simply clip the conductor in wherever it suits your animals and the terrain.
Standard Step-In Post or Stirrup Post?
A classic plastic post has a narrow tread and is especially light. The stirrup post has a wide stirrup that takes your whole foot. That helps in firm or dry ground. Both are too weak for corners, ends and gates. There you set a sturdy wooden, metal or recycled post with an insulator so that the tensioned conductor does not pull the fence line over.
Frequently asked questions
Do plastic posts need extra insulators?
No, the plastic insulates by itself and the conductor goes straight into the moulded loops. Still, check now and then for cracks or broken loops, because the conductor can slip or touch the ground there.
How long do plastic posts last outdoors?
That depends a lot on sun, frost and wear. If you pull the posts after the season, clean them and store them out of the light, the plastic stays flexible for longer and breaks less often.
What can I do if the ground is too hard for step-in posts?
Make a pilot hole with an iron bar, or put the posts in after rain. Never hit the top of the post with a metal hammer, as the plastic will splinter.
Plastic Posts for Flexible Grazing
Light plastic posts are made for anyone who changes their grazing layout often. They weigh little, can be carried in bundles and need no insulators, because the loops for polywire, polyrope and polytape are already built in. The classic Plastic Posts cover almost every fence height with their different lengths, from low fences right up to the horse paddock. In firm ground the Stirrup Posts come into their own: you stand on the wide stirrup with your whole foot and press them into the soil with little effort. Both types work as line posts. For corners and gates, combine them with sturdy posts. The result is a fence you can put up and take down again in no time.
