Puzzle Mats for Horses: Seamless and Easy to Lay
A puzzle mat for horses has a jigsaw edge on all four sides. The mats interlock and create a closed surface that neither urine nor bedding can get through. You lay them floating without glue, so there is no need to fix them to the floor at all. Here you will find Belmondo mats in several thicknesses and the large PUZZLE stall mat with 2.25 m² per piece for the stable.
How to Lay Them Successfully
What matters is a level, load-bearing base, ideally concrete or a compacted layer of grit. Start in one corner and work your way forward row by row, tapping the jigsaw edges together with a rubber mallet. Along the edges, cut the mats with a sharp knife so they fit flush against the wall without gaps. Do not leave a gap anywhere around the edge, otherwise the mats will creep over time. If a mat ever gets damaged, you only replace that one piece.
Which Puzzle Mat Goes Where?
Belmondo Basic, Classic and the soft Trend are designed for the stable. In the aisle and under swinging doors the thin Walkway lies flat, and for the wash bay and the area in front of the stable there is the Walk Pro. Outdoors, the studded Belmondo paddock mat provides drainage. The large PUZZLE stall mat measuring 183 x 123 cm covers a lot of floor with few joints, which speeds up work in large stables. In the Area of use filter you quickly see which mat is intended for your area.
Frequently asked questions
How many puzzle mats do I need for a horse stable?
Work out the area of the stable and divide it by the area of one mat. A 3 x 3.5 m stable has 10.5 m², so you need around 11 to 12 mats measuring 1 x 1 m. Plan in a few spares, as mats are cut to size along the edges.
Can I lay puzzle mats on soil?
Yes, if you create a load-bearing layer first. Compacted gravel or grit with a thin levelling layer of sand works well. Without a base, the mats sink in where the load is heaviest and the joints open up.
Can I lift puzzle mats again later?
Yes, because they are not glued down, you can lift them at any time, for example for a thorough clean or when moving yards. Start with an edge mat and release the joints piece by piece. Afterwards you put them back in exactly the same way.
Puzzle Mats: A Floor That Fits Together
The jigsaw edge is more than just a connection. It makes sure your stable mats form a tight surface on which nothing shifts, even when your horse paws or rolls. Because there are no open joints, no urine seeps under the mats and no odours build up underneath. You can lay them without glue and without a contractor: position the mat, tap the edge in, trim at the sides. Whether for the stable, aisle, wash bay or paddock, there is a suitable thickness for every area. And if a mat ever gets damaged after years of use, you only change that one piece instead of renewing the whole floor. In large stables in particular this saves you a lot of time and effort. Your stable floor stays sealed, clean and pleasant for horse and owner for a long time.
