Slot Insulators: Quick to Fit, Easy to Retrofit
Slot insulators have an opening at the side into which you simply hook the conductor. Unlike with a closed ring, you do not have to thread the polywire through every insulator. That makes them practical when you are upgrading an existing fence or want to add an extra strand. They are screwed into the timber post on a shank and suit polywire and thin wire.
When a Slot Is Better Than a Ring
The biggest advantage is the time saved. You can fit all the insulators first, unroll the conductor and then hook it in post by post. When you replace a conductor, there is nothing to unthread either. Because the slot is open, the conductor does not sit quite as firmly as in a ring. On straight, well tensioned runs that is not a problem, but on bends or where livestock push hard, many people prefer the closed ring insulator. Slot insulators are therefore especially popular for turnout pens, runs and short divisions around the yard.
Colour and Material
Slot insulators come in eye catching red, which makes the fence easier to see, and in discreet black, which blends unobtrusively into the landscape. The plastic is UV resistant and the galvanised steel shank holds even in hard wood. So you can choose the look of your fence to suit your farm. Can the conductor slip out of a slot insulator?
Hardly ever with a well tensioned conductor on a straight run. If animals push hard against the fence or the fence follows curves, a closed ring is the safer option.
Do slot insulators also take electric fence rope?
Most slot insulators are designed for polywire and wire. The slot is usually too narrow for thick rope, which is why there are dedicated rope insulators.
How far should I screw the slot insulator into the post?
Turn it in until the shank sits firmly and the slot faces the side from which you hook in the conductor. The plastic should not touch the post.
