The hay lies protected inside and is not trodden into the ground. For group housing in an open barn it is a proven solution, because the whole herd can eat at once.

A safety feeding barrier has openings shaped so a horse can easily pull its head out again, even if it gets a fright. Location and ground
The ground around a square bale feeder takes a lot of wear. A surfaced base of paving, paddock grids or gravel stops the area from turning into mud in winter. Will a square bale fit in the feeder?
Square bale feeders are made for rectangular bales, but the inside dimensions vary from model to model. Measure your bales beforehand and compare them with the feeder's dimensions. You can of course fill it with loose hay as well.
How do I stop dominant horses from blocking the feeder?
Place the feeder in the open so lower-ranking horses can move to another side. For larger groups, a second feeder or extra hay nets elsewhere help. This means less crowding at the feeding place.
