Hinges and fittings are sized for the weight of the big leaves, so the gate does not drop out of true.

Measure at the top, in the middle and at the bottom, because older openings are rarely truly square, and take the smallest figure. Also check that there is room for the open leaf and that the ground is level enough for the gate not to catch. On uneven ground, a floor rail or levelling before fitting is worthwhile.
