Sweat Scrapers: drier, faster after riding
Despite its name, a sweat scraper is not a sharp tool but a flexible strip with a blunt edge. After hosing down or a sweaty training session, you use it to draw the water out of the coat. Your horse dries much more quickly, does not get chilled and feels more comfortable. Especially in summer after hosing, or in spring and autumn after riding, it belongs in every grooming box.
How to scrape properly
Place the sweat scraper on the neck and draw it with light pressure in the direction of hair growth over the large muscle areas: neck, shoulder, back, quarters and flanks. Leave out the legs, head and bony areas, where you are better off drying with a towel or sponge. Shake the water off the scraper now and then. Afterwards, walk your horse dry or stand it in a sheltered spot with a cooler.
Straight, curved or as a wiper
The classic sweat scraper is a curved band of metal or plastic with a handle at each end. Straight models with one handle can be used single-handed. Sweat wipers made of rubber or soft two-component plastic are flexible, adapt to the shape of the body and are pleasant for sensitive horses. A gel or soft-touch grip stays secure even with wet hands.

Can I use a sweat scraper without hosing first?
Yes, if your horse is soaked with sweat you can scrape the sweat off with it. Once the sweat has dried, the scraper hardly helps. In that case, let it dry completely and brush it out.
How long does a wet horse take to dry?
That depends on the weather, the length of the coat and the wind. If you scrape the water off thoroughly and keep your horse moving, it goes much faster. Do not stand a wet horse in a draught, and if you put a rug on, use only a breathable cooler.
Is a metal sweat scraper better than a plastic one?
Metal is very robust and draws off the water well, but it is harder. Plastic and rubber are softer and follow curves more closely. For sensitive horses and for children, soft wipers are often more pleasant.
