Wet, cold weather with a strong wind is often more unpleasant for many horses than dry, frosty cold. A Turnout & Rain Rug is waterproof and breathable, so rain stays outside while moisture from the body can escape. Without fill it is a pure rain sheet for spring and autumn. With fill it becomes a warm winter rug for the field and the open stable, ready for the coldest months.

What makes a good turnout rug

A tough outer fabric stands up to play with other horses. The denier rating tells you how tear resistant the fabric is. Taped seams and a tail flap keep the rain out. A high neck line or a neck cover protects the crest. Cross surcingles, leg straps or a fillet string make sure the rug stays in place when your horse rolls. Shoulder gussets give more freedom of movement while grazing.

Light or filled

A rain sheet with no fill or a very light one is enough for spring and autumn and for horses with a dense coat. With 100 to 150 g your horse gets a little extra warmth, while heavier fills are meant for clipped horses and frost. Choose the fill according to clip, management and type of horse. Check daily whether your horse is sweating or cold under the rug, and look for rubbing at the shoulders and withers.

Why is my horse wet under its rain sheet?
That can be down to sweat if the rug is too warm, or to waterproofing that is wearing off. Water running in at the neck also causes wet patches. Check the fill first and then whether the rug is still waterproof.

How do I make a turnout rug waterproof again?
Wash it with a mild rug wash without fabric softener. Then apply a reproofing spray for outdoor textiles and let everything dry thoroughly. That way water will bead off again.

What size do I need for my horse?
Measure the back length from the centre of the chest over the shoulder to the tail. The figure in centimetres corresponds to the rug size. If your horse is between two sizes, a fitting at the shoulder and withers helps.
