Chicken Coop: A Safe and Cozy Home for Your Poultry

Offer your animals a comfortable place to sleep. Here you will find weatherproof and practical coops for species-appropriate keeping.

Chicken Coop - The Most Important Retreat for Your Animals

A high-quality chicken coop is the heart of any poultry keeping. It fulfills several important tasks at once: it reliably protects your poultry at night from predators like foxes or martens, offers a dry shelter in bad weather, and creates a quiet, darkened place for daily egg-laying. When your animals feel comfortable in their coop, they are more relaxed, healthier, and lay eggs more consistently.

The Right Equipment is Crucial

A good coop already comes with the most important basic equipment. This includes cozy nesting boxes that offer the hens a protected space to lay their eggs. Just as important are roosting bars at the right height, as chickens naturally like to sleep elevated. To make daily cleaning easier for you, many modern models have a pull-out droppings tray under the roosting bars.

Wood or Plastic?

Opinions often differ when choosing the material. A wooden chicken coop blends beautifully and naturally into any garden. The material breathes and ensures a good indoor climate but needs to be maintained regularly with a wood glaze. A coop made of plastic or HPL (High Pressure Laminate), on the other hand, is extremely durable, weatherproof, and particularly easy to clean. This is a huge advantage in the fight against annoying parasites like the red fowl mite, as they can hardly hide in the smooth surfaces.

FAQ - Chicken Coops

How big must the coop be for my animals?

The size of the coop depends on whether the animals only use it for sleeping or also have to stay there during the day in bad weather. If a large outdoor run is available, a rule of thumb is about 3 to 4 normal-sized chickens per square meter of coop space. The density can be slightly higher for bantams.

How do I keep the coop mite-free?

Hygiene is the key. Clean out the coop regularly and clean the roosting bars and nesting boxes in particular. It helps enormously to preventively dust the corners and cracks in the coop with diatomaceous earth. This fine natural powder dries out the mites and prevents them from spreading among the flock.

Where is the best location in the garden?

Place the coop in a quiet spot protected from strong winds. It should not be in the blazing midday sun, otherwise, it will get extremely hot inside in summer. A slightly elevated location or a coop on stilts also prevents ground moisture from seeping into the wood from below.
