The requirements for men's riding jackets and coats differ from standard everyday clothing. In the saddle, the upper body is in constant motion, so the clothing must not be restrictive. At the same time, the materials must balance temperature fluctuations between physical exertion and quiet walking phases. Breathable, wind- and water-repellent fabrics protect the rider from the elements without causing heat build-up.
Equestrian-Specific Features
A key feature of riding jackets is the 2-way zipper. It can be opened from the bottom so that the jacket does not bunch up when sitting in the saddle. Long riding coats are additionally equipped with riding slits on the back. These can be opened via zipper or press studs, allowing the coat to fall over the thighs and the back of the saddle, protecting these areas from rain and cold.
Materials for the Stable and Saddle
For the transitional season, softshell jackets or light blousons that are wind-resistant and withstand mechanical stress are suitable. In winter, padded quilted jackets or lined thermal coats are used. What does the water column mean for riding jackets?
The water column indicates how waterproof a fabric is. From a value of approx. 3,000 mm, a jacket is considered waterproof in normal rain. For long trail rides in heavy, continuous rain, jackets with a water column of 5,000 mm to 10,000 mm and taped seams should be chosen.
How do I wash waterproof riding jackets correctly?
Waterproof jackets should be washed at a maximum of 30 °C (86 °F) using a special detergent for membrane clothing. Fabric softener must be strictly avoided, as it clogs the pores of the membrane and destroys breathability. It is advisable to renew the waterproofing after washing.
