Men's Equestrian Clothing: comfortable, durable and sporty
Men's equestrian clothing is cut for broader shoulders, longer legs and a different riding position than womenswear. Breeches with grip, jackets with a riding vent, gilets and polo shirts let you move freely in the saddle. For competitions there is matching show clothing with pale breeches and a stock or tie, so you look the part on the show ground too.
Breeches that keep you secure
Good men's breeches have flat inner seams, stretchy fabric and grip at the knee or seat. Silicone knee grip gives hold while still allowing plenty of contact with the horse, and a full seat in synthetic leather or silicone sits more firmly in the saddle. Choose a rise that does not slip down when you lean forward or ride in a light seat. A belt helps keep breeches in place as well.
Tops for indoors and out
A polo shirt or technical shirt is the basis for everyday schooling. On top go a hybrid gilet or a softshell jacket that blocks the wind and still breathes. For winter and rain, padded jackets with a high collar are practical. Men's riding jackets are a little longer at the back and have a vent so they do not ride up when you sit. Thin riding socks without bulky seams complete the outfit inside your boots.
Frequently asked questions
Can I ride in jeans?
For a short hack it is fine, but over time the thick inner seams rub at the knee and calf. Jeans also have little stretch and tend to slip in the saddle. Breeches are far more comfortable if you ride regularly.
What size should I choose in men's breeches?
Start with your normal trouser size and check the size chart of the brand. Breeches fit more closely than casual trousers but should not feel tight. If in doubt, try two sizes and sit down in them.
What do men wear at a competition?
Usually white or pale breeches, a pale shirt or show shirt with a stock or tie and a dark show jacket. Add tall boots, or jodhpur boots with half chaps. The exact requirements are in the schedule for your show.
Men's riding wear at a glance
For a secure seat there are Riding Breeches with knee or full seat grip. Jackets & Coats keep out wind and rain, and in milder weather Riding Vests are often enough. Underneath you can wear Riding Shirts and polos that wick sweat away. Thin Riding Socks go inside your boots without pressing. For your next show you will find pale breeches and stocks under Competition Clothing. That way you are comfortably and properly dressed for everyday riding and in the warm up arena.
