Riding Shirts: sporty and smart in the saddle

Men's riding shirts are usually cut as a polo shirt with a short button placket and a collar. They look smart, are made from breathable fabric and have a sporty fit that does not flap while you ride. A polo works for schooling as well as for lessons or a day at the show ground, and with a gilet on top it also sees you through cooler autumn days at the yard.

Fabric and cut

A good riding polo is made from technical fabric or a cotton blend with added stretch. Technical fabrics dry faster and wick sweat away, while cotton blends feel soft and are comfortable for everyday wear. Ideally the back is a little longer so the shirt stays tucked in when you lean forward. Side vents give extra freedom of movement. Make sure the shoulders do not pull when you reach forward with your arms, for example when you shorten the reins.

Layering for changing weather

In summer you wear the polo on its own, in spring and autumn under a riding vest or softshell jacket. That way you can take off a layer in the arena when you warm up. For competitions, the competition clothing range has pale shirts and stocks to wear under your show jacket. Dark polos are easier to keep clean at the yard, while pale ones look fresher in summer.

Can I wear a polo shirt at a competition?
In training and at small local events it is often fine. In most classes a pale shirt or show shirt with a show jacket is expected. The exact rules are set out in the schedule.

Do polo shirts shrink in the wash?
Shirts with a high cotton content can shrink slightly in a hot wash. Wash them at 30 to 40 degrees and let them dry in the air, and they will keep their shape. Technical shirts are less sensitive in this respect.

Which colour is practical for the yard?
Dark colours such as navy, grey or black are more forgiving of dust and horse hair. Pale shirts are more comfortable in summer because they absorb less sun. Many riders have both and choose according to the weather and the occasion.
