Organic Straight Feed: Organic Grain and Protein Feed for Your Farm

If you farm organically, you need feed that fits the way you keep your animals. Here you get organic feed grain and organic protein feed in handy sacks.

Organic Straight Feed: Feed from Organic Farming

Organic straight feeds are single feed materials from organic agriculture, such as organic wheat, organic barley or organic oats. You can use them on an organic farm just as well as in hobby keeping, whenever your animals are to be fed organically. With grain and organic protein feed you can put together your own rations for organic laying hens, horses or cattle, or top up an existing feed exactly where it falls short.

Organic feed grain for energy

Organic wheat, organic barley, organic oats and organic black oats are the classic sources of energy in the trough. Organic feed barley suits cattle and pigs well, while oats and black oats are popular with horses and hens. You can get organic maize whole or as organic cracked maize in a fine and a coarse grade. Hens and young poultry take the fine grade readily, while the coarse one suits rations for ruminants and pigs. Everything comes in sacks of 20 to 25 kg.

Organic protein feed and lucerne

Grain alone provides too little protein. This is where organic soya cake and organic sunflower cake help. They are made by pressing the seeds and contain plenty of protein along with some fat. They balance out grain heavy rations, for example for laying hens or dairy cows. Organic lucerne pellets bring pressed, protein rich green forage into the stable and suit horses, goats, sheep and rabbits well.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between soya cake and soya meal?
Soya cake is made by pressing the beans mechanically, so more of the oil stays in it. Soya meal has more of the oil extracted and contains a little more protein instead. In organic farming the pressed cake is the usual form.

How long does organic feed grain keep?
Whole grain stored dry, cool and well ventilated usually keeps until the next harvest. Crushed or rolled grain spoils faster and should be used within a few weeks. If it smells musty or has gone lumpy, it no longer belongs in the trough.

Do I need to soak lucerne pellets?
For horses it makes sense to soak the pellets in water first, especially for animals that bolt their food. This helps you prevent choke. Goats, sheep and rabbits usually eat lucerne pellets dry without any problem.

Organic feed for organic farms and smallholders

Whether you run a certified organic farm or simply want to feed your back garden hens organically, organic straight feeds let you decide what goes into the trough. Organic wheat, organic barley and organic oats provide energy for laying hens, horses and ruminants. Organic black oats are a popular change in the stable. Organic maize comes whole or cracked in a fine and a coarse grade, depending on whether you feed poultry or larger animals. Organic soya cake and organic sunflower cake add more protein to the ration and mix well with grain. Organic lucerne pellets complement the forage of horses, goats and rabbits with valuable green feed. The 20 to 25 kg sacks are easy to carry and can be stored dry without taking up much room in the shed.
