Straight Feed for Cattle: The Basis for a Balanced Ration
The performance and health of dairy cattle and beef cattle depend largely on an optimally calculated feed ration. Straight feeds (straights) are used to specifically upgrade the farm's own forage. By individually combining energy-rich grains and high-quality protein carriers, the ration can be tailored exactly to the needs of the respective performance group.
Important Feed Components for the Rumen
To support digestion in the rumen and make nutrients optimally available, agricultural raw materials are offered in various forms:
- Energy Sources: Grains such as corn, barley, and wheat provide valuable starch. So that the rumen bacteria can break this down, the grain is mechanically processed (rolled, crushed, or flaked).
- Protein Sources: A sufficient protein supply is necessary for high milk or fattening yields. Soybean cake offers a highly concentrated and easily digestible protein source.
- Structure and Processing: While finely crushed grain is broken down quickly in the rumen, coarsely crushed grain or rolled flakes provide a more even supply of energy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should whole grains not be fed to cattle?
Whole grains have a hard shell that can hardly be broken down by the digestive juices in the rumen. A large part would be excreted undigested. Crushing, rolling, or flaking breaks this shell and significantly increases feed efficiency.
When do I use soybean cake?
Soybean cake is a by-product of soybean oil extraction and has a very high crude protein content. It is used when the basic forage (such as corn silage or hay) cannot meet the protein requirements for milk production or muscle building in fattening.
