The wall-mounted drinker is the classic answer for tie stalls and narrow standing areas. It is bolted directly to the wall, the tube frame or a partition and therefore sits clear of the walkway. Because it feeds itself from the mains through a pipe valve, it needs no storage container and no electricity. Mounting that holds

A solid substrate is the deciding factor. On masonry you work with plugs and hexagon bolts, on a tube frame with a pipe clamp that grips the bowl in pairs. Where there is no wall to use, a base in 30 x 40, 30 x 60 or 30 x 100 centimetres puts the bowl at the right height and at the same time lifts it clear of the floor, so bedding does not end up in the water. Before you drill, check that the supply pipe runs centrally behind the bowl, otherwise the connection ends up needlessly awkward.

Protection against damage

Cattle are not gentle with barn equipment. A guard hoop in hot-dip galvanised steel tube absorbs the knocks and stops an animal stepping into the bowl or levering it out of its bracket. In sheds with high animal pressure a bite guard for the supply pipe is worth adding too, because exposed pipework tends to get chewed. Together they cost very little and save you replacing the whole bowl early.

What is the right mounting height?
For adult cattle the top edge of the bowl sits around 80 centimetres above the standing area. Mount it lower for young stock and calves so they can drink without stretching.

Can I fit a wall-mounted drinker outdoors?
Yes, as long as the supply pipe is laid below the frost line or protected with trace heating. Otherwise it is not the bowl that freezes but the pipe in front of it.

Does every valve fit every bowl?
