Goat Fence: A Secure Boundary for Goats That Love to Climb

Goats try every weak spot. Here you will find electric netting, wolf netting, galvanised hurdles and posts for a secure paddock.

Goat Fence: High, Tight and Carrying Current

Goats climb, push and test every weak spot. A goat fence therefore has to stand higher and above all tighter than a simple boundary for sheep. In this category you will find electric netting, wolf netting, galvanised hurdles and spare posts from AKO, Agrarzone and Kerbl for a clean boundary around pasture, exercise area and yard. In the end three things decide it: enough height, firmly set posts and enough voltage on the fence.

Netting and the right height

Electric netting comes here in 90 and 108 cm, for example as Agrarzone Classic in green and orange, as AKO OviNet Premium and Profi, as AKO TitanNet or as Kerbl sheep netting. Alongside them is the AKO EasyNet with a ground clearance version at 105 cm. In regions with wolves, 120 cm counts as the minimum and 145 cm is regarded as safer. The AKO TitanNet Premium Vario at 108/122 cm and the AKO OviNet Maxi at 122 cm are built for exactly that. An extra live wire along the top takes the fun out of climbing over.

Posts, hurdles and setting up

The post decides whether the netting stays tight. A double spike stands more firmly than a single spike, because the post does not twist so easily in the ground. Spare posts come with a double spike in 90, 106, 108 and 112 cm and with a single spike in 90 cm. Where the boundary has to be solid, reach for galvanised hurdles. They slot together without tools and come in 1.37, 1.83 and 2.75 x 0.92 m, also with a gate and with a lamb creep. With a roof section and the 2.75 x 2.75 m field shelter that turns into a sheltered area. Keep the growth under the fence short, otherwise it draws the voltage away.

Frequently asked questions

How high does a goat fence have to be?
For everyday grazing, netting of 90 to 108 cm is enough if it stands tight and carries a good charge. With keen climbers and in wolf areas you should go to 120 cm and above.

Why do goats climb over the fence?
Usually the netting is sagging or the voltage is too low. Firmly set posts, clean alignment and a wire along the top take away the incentive.

What does a double spike on the post do?
It spreads the load over two points and holds the post straight. The fence stays tight for longer, even in wind and on soft ground.

Planning and putting up a goat fence

A good goat fence starts with the height and ends with the tension. Electric netting in 90 and 108 cm covers normal grazing, while in regions with wolves netting from 120 cm upwards is the better choice. Posts with a double spike hold the netting tight and twist less easily, and spare posts run from 90 to 112 cm. Where a solid division is wanted, galvanised hurdles in 1.37, 1.83 and 2.75 m width come into play, with a gate or with a lamb creep as you prefer. If you want everything matched to each other, take a look at the Goat Fence Set, where netting or polywire and the energiser are already combined. Check the voltage and the growth under the fence regularly, then the herd stays where it belongs.
